What is the NHS MenB Vaccination?

Meningococcal B (MenB) disease is a serious bacterial infection that can develop rapidly and become life-threatening. It can lead to meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain and spinal cord) or septicaemia (blood poisoning), requiring urgent medical treatment.

The NHS MenB Vaccination Programme provides free protection for eligible young people, particularly those preparing to start university or other residential education, where close living environments can increase the risk of infection.

You may be eligible for a free NHS MenB vaccination if you are:

  • A Year 13 student (or equivalent) aged 17–18 years who meets the NHS eligibility criteria.
  • Starting university for the first time and living in university accommodation.
  • Entering eligible residential further education.
  • Eligible under the current NHS MenB vaccination programme.

Is the NHS MenB vaccine free?

Yes. The vaccine is provided free of charge for people who meet the NHS eligibility criteria.

No. The MenACWY vaccine protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. The MenB vaccine protects against meningococcal group B, so both vaccines may be recommended.
